Semantic Chunking

Intelligently splitting documents to preserve meaning.

1. Plain-Language Definition

Semantic chunking is the process of breaking massive documents into smaller, meaningful, and overlapping pieces (chunks) before they are stored in the vector database.

2. Why It Exists

LLMs have a limited context window. You cannot feed an entire 500-page medical textbook into a prompt at once; it must be broken down.

3. What Breaks Without It

If you split a book randomly by character count, you will slice sentences or paragraphs in half. The AI will lose the context of the sentence, severely degrading its ability to answer questions.

4. How StarkLLM Implements It

StarkLLM uses natural language processing heuristics to split documents at logical boundaries—such as paragraphs or sentence ends—while intentionally overlapping chunks by 10-20% so context isn't lost at the edges.

5. User-Visible Benefit

Significantly higher retrieval accuracy, ensuring the AI receives complete, coherent thoughts rather than fragmented text.

6. Practical Example

A multi-page legal contract is chunked section-by-section. When you ask about 'Liability', the entire relevant clause is retrieved intact.
